English Programs

Heartland's English Programs are comprehensive English as a Second Language (ESL) programs for international learners. Heartland offers three ESL programs to suit your learning needs-from beginner to advanced levels. All courses have small classes and students can move between programs.

  Access Program

The Access Program is a flexible ESL program focusing on conversation . Students may begin classes any Monday and study for any length of time. Students have afternoon options such as pronunciation, writing, reading, idioms and slang, grammar, TOEIC, TOEFL and others. The Access Program is ideal for students who want to improve their speaking skills and want flexible start and end dates.

2009/2010 start dates:   Every Monday with the exceptions of some holidays.

  Impact Program

The Impact Program is an accelerated and concentrated ESL program. There is equal emphasis on speaking, listening, reading and writing. Each level is 8 weeks long. Students have weekly tests and receive a grade at the end of the program. The Impact Program is ideal for students who want to improve their English skills quickly.  

2010 start dates: January 4, March 1, May 3, July 5, August 30, October 25

  Focus Program

The Focus Program is an 8 week ESL program for specific purposes. Currently, the program alternates between Academic English and Business English as well as serving as test preparation courses.

FOCUS Academic: Students prepare for success by learning academic content and building academic skills including finding the main idea in a text, recognizing organizational patterns like compare/contrast and understanding fact vs. opinion. Students also learn preparation skills for the TOEFL and IELTS tests.

FOCUS Business: Students prepare for success in international business communication. They will learn presentation skills, negotiating skills, leading and participating in meetings, giving opinions etc. Students also will learn preparation skills for TOEIC and IELTS tests.
